Blackall-Tambo Region

Camping and Caravanning in the Blackall-Tambo Region

The Blackall-Tambo Region is located on the Queensland Mitchell Grass Downs which was named after the rolling open downs of Southern England. Most of the region is devoted to pastoral leasehold and the area was settled by Europeans in 1863, with descendants of many of the original selectors still in the area. Local industry was predominantly sheep until the decline of the wool industry and drought led to many graziers turning to the cattle industry. Much of the region depends on the underlying Great Artesian Basin for water.

Nestled on the banks of the Barcoo River, Blackall and Tambo offers visitors’ fresh country atmosphere enhanced by glorious sunsets and clear night skies, distanced from hectic pace of city living yet easily accessible by road and air. The Barcoo River is a ‘dry’ river with many water-holes along its course, and with the Alice and Thompson Rivers become the three rivers that run into a creek! (Cooper’s Creek)
